Yesterday, my 18-month-old daughter Charlotte spent an hour outside just filling and dumping buckets full of dirt over and over again, testing what it was like to dump the soil on plants, concrete, and her reluctant dirt-eating sidekick--our dog Pumpkin. As I watched in awe how deliberately and diligently she went about her tasks, it occurred to me she just might be a future scientist or even a naturalist in the making. When I was a new mother, one of my keys to survival was getting out of the house. Even when my daughter Ruby was only a few days old, putting her in the sling and leaving the warmth of our home was important for several reasons. I needed it for my overall sense of well being and to help me get acquainted with my little bundle of love.
