Coping With Stress

Troubling and uncertain times have an emotional impact on grown-ups as well as children. These tips can help you and your child face and talk about unsettling events.

Be aware of your own feelings.

It's normal to feel anxious or unsettled. You might even feel a sense of helplessness when you can't protect your child from changing circumstances. Keep in mind that children respond to and learn from your reactions.

Trust your instincts.

You know your child best and will be able to pick up on slight changes in behavior. Children of different ages will have different needs, and a wide range of reactions is normal.

Ask questions!

Encourage your child to ask questions, too. It's a great way to start a conversation and hear what's on her mind. When talking with your child about events, take the time to listen and not pass judgement. Be patient, understanding, and reassuring. Let her know it is okay for her to express her feelings.

Be positive and reassuring.

Children need to be reassured. They want to know you have a situation under control and that things will get better. Hugs help!

Look for everyday moments.

Every experience is an opportunity to help your child build important life skills. Everyday moments help you make time during daily routines to listen to your child.
