Project Liberty is a program that provides free crisis counseling services to persons, families and groups most affected by the September 11 World Trade Center disaster. Project Liberty offers services in the five boroughs of New York City and in Delaware, Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester counties. Counseling sessions can take place wherever you wish to have them - in your home, school, business, office, or church.
At the heart of all of the support activities of Project Liberty are the values of hope, respect, safety, excellence and recovery. At Project Liberty, we strive to help people to cope and return to their pre-disaster levels of functioning.
Sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Center for Mental Health Services, Project Liberty is being administered by the New York State Office of Mental Health. It is a collaborative effort of the Office of Mental Health, local governments and provider agencies.
DISASTER. It strikes anytime, anywhere. It takes many forms -- a hurricane, an earthquake, a tornado, a flood, a fire or a hazardous spill, an act of nature or an act of terrorism. It builds over days or weeks, or hits suddenly, without warning. Every year, millions of Americans face disaster, and its terrifying consequences. The Federal Emergency Management Agency -- FEMA -- is an independent agency of the federal government, reporting to the President. Since its founding in 1979, FEMA's mission has been clear: to reduce loss of life and property and protect our nation's critical infrastructure from all types of hazards through a comprehensive, risk-based, emergency management program of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
The Office of Mental Health operates psychiatric centers across the state, and also regulates, certifies and oversees more than 2,500 programs which are operated by local governments and nonprofit agencies. These programs include various inpatient and outpatient programs, emergency, community support, residential, and family care programs
