ELMO: (To Camera) Yeah, that's right. Even Elmo gets scared sometimes. MARIA: (To Camera) Young children can experience all different kinds of fears... ELMO: (To Camera) Ooh. That's true, too, Maria. Sometimes Elmo's afraid of the dark and sometimes Elmo's afraid of loud noises and sometimes, sometimes Elmo is afraid of giant pickles. MARIA: Giant pickles?! ELMO: Yeah! Just like in that movie, Maria, Attack of the 90 Foot Gherkin. Very, very scary. MARIA: Well, that sounds scary ELMO: It was. MARIA: (To Camera) and you know in fact sometimes it is very hard for children to put their feelings into words. ELMO: Yeah! Well, one time Elmo was very, very scared and didn't know what to do or say. MARIA: Yes, I remember that Elmo. ELMO: Hey Maria, maybe we should show what happened to Elmo when there was a fire in Mr. Hooper's store and Elmo was very scared! MARIA: Yes, Elmo, That's a great idea. ELMO: Oh good. MARIA MOVES TO HELP ELMO ONTO A STOOL. ELMO IS LAUGHING. ALAN: Oh, hey, guys. ELMO: Oh! ALAN: I didn't hear you come in. ELMO/MARIA: Hi, Alan. ALAN: Hey, what can I get you? ELMO: (VERY GROWN-UP) Look, (CLEARS THROAT), Elmo and Maria would like to see a menu, please. ALAN: A menu, huh? MARIA: (AS ALAN HANDS MARIA A MENU) Yes, well, this is a very special occasion. Elmo is taking me to lunch. ELMO LAUGHS. ALAN: No kidding? ELMO: Oh, yeah, Alan. Elmo's Mommy and Daddy go out to lunch sometimes, and Elmo wanted to go out to have lunch with his special friend, Maria. ALAN: Oh, very good. ELMO LAUGHS AS MARIA HUGS HIS HEAD. CHIEF: (TO MARIA/ELMO) Are you folks okay? MARIA: Yes, we're fine, thank you. CHIEF: Alright, alright... please stand back, everybody. THE CHIEF MOVES TOWARD THE STORE, AS THE CAMERA TIGHTENS ON ALAN AND MARIA. MARIA: Alan, what happened? ALAN: Ugh, it was the grease in the fryer. It caught fire. I think I put it out with the fire extinguisher, but, but I'm not sure. MARIA: (SOBERED) Oh, a fire in Hooper's Store... wow. ALAN: (THE SAME, SIGHS) Scary... THE CAMERA TILTS DOWN TO ELMO, WHO IS HOLDING TIGHTLY TO MARIA'S WAIST, LOOKING VERY SCARED INDEED. ALAN, MARIA, AND ELMO STAND SOMEPLACE ON THE STREET OUTSIDE HOOPER'S STORE. THE CROWD OF ONLOOKERS HAS DISPERSED SOMEWHAT, BUT THERE IS STILL A SMALL GROUP OF ADULTS, KIDS, AND AMS WATCHING. CHIEF: (TO ALAN) You were lucky. Nothing caught fire except the grease. Your store is fine. THE CROWD SIGHS WITH RELIEF. MARIA: That's a relief. ALAN: Yeah. Listen, I-I'm sorry, it looks like we bothered you for nothing... CHIEF: Oh, you didn't bother us at all. This is our job. And you did the right thing. Anytime you think there's a fire, don't wait. Call the fire department right away. ALAN: We'll do that. Thanks. CHIEF: (BENDING DOWN, TO ELMO) And anytime you think there's a fire, or smoke, you tell a grown-up, okay? ELMO LOOKS MORE SHELL-SHOCKED THAN EVER. ELMO: Okay. ALAN: Is it safe to go back in? CHIEF: Just as soon as we get our equipment cleared. ALAN: Alright, thank you so much. Appreciate it. HE PATS ALAN ON THE SHOULDER AND WALKS OFF. MARIA: Well, Elmo, I guess our special lunch turned out to be more special than we thought. ALAN: I think all three of us could use a special lunch. How about it? MARIA: Sounds good to me. ALAN: Come on, Elmo. One, uh, super scrumptious grilled cheese sandwich coming up... ALAN AND MARIA HEAD FOR THE STORE. ELMO PULLS BACK AND DOESN'T MOVE. MARIA: Elmo? Are you alright? ELMO: Elmo doesn't want to go back into Hooper's Store. ALAN: (CROUCHES DOWN TO ELMO) Oh hey, hey-hey-hey-hey... it's okay, it's okay. There's nothing to be afraid of. The Chief said that the fire's out. ELMO: (HIS VOICE RISING) Elmo doesn't care, Alan! Elmo, Elmo doesn't wanna go back into Hooper's Store ever again! MARIA LOOKS AT ALAN AND CROUCHES DOWN BESIDE ELMO. THE CAMERA TIGHTENS ON MARIA AND ELMO. MARIA: Elmo- BILL: (OC) A fire can be a pretty scary thing. ELMO LOOKS UP, LOOKS (IF POSSIBLE) EVEN MORE FRIGHTENED, AND DUCKS BEHIND MARIA. THE CAMERA OPENS UP TO REVEAL A FIREFIGHTER IN FULL TURNOUT GEAR, EXCEPT FOR HIS MASK, WHICH HE IS HOLDING IN HIS HAND. HE SMILES. ELMO: Oh! BILL: I guess a firefighter can be a pretty scary thing, too. Hi, my name's Bill. ALAN: Hey, I'm Alan. BILL: Hi, Alan. MARIA: Hi, I'm Maria. BILL: Hi, Maria. And who's this little guy? MARIA: This is Elmo. BILL: Hello, Elmo. ELMO: (WEAKLY) Hello. BILL: I'm sorry I scared you with all this stuff I'm wearing. ALAN: That's quite an outfit. BILL: And I need every piece of it when I'm fighting a fire. (TO ELMO) Would you like to know what each piece does? ELMO: (WEAKLY) Okay. BILL: Right. Well, we use a lot of water when we're fighting a fire. So I wear this coat and these pants to keep me dry, and to keep my body from getting burned... These boots do the same thing for my feet... This helmet protects my head, in case something heavy falls on it... And this mask- (HE HOLDS IT UP) Well, sometimes in a fire there's lots of smoke- MARIA: (TRYING TO BE HELPFUL, TO ELMO) There was a lot of smoke in Hooper's Store, remember? ELMO: Yeah. BILL: And if I breathe in too much smoke, it can make me sick. So I carry my own air in this tank, and if I need it, I breathe it in through this mask. (HE COVERS HIS FACE WITH THE MASK) How do I look? ELMO: (WEAKLY) Okay. BILL: (LOWERING THE MASK, SMILING) So, here's something I want you to remember, Elmo. If you're ever in a fire, go to the firefighters. They may look a little scary, but they're there to help you and take care of you. Okay? ELMO: (WEAKLY) Okay. BILL: Feeling better? ELMO: (WEAKLY) Elmo's okay. BILL SQUATS DOWN BESIDE ELMO. BILL: Hey, ya know what I ha--, I just had a great idea. How would you like to come to the firehouse for a visit, and see what a real firehouse looks like? ALAN: Wow. MARIA: Oh, that would be terrific, wouldn't it, Elmo? ELMO: Well, what's a firehouse? Is it a house that's on fire? BILL: No. It's a place where firefighters like me wait until it's time to go put out a fire. What d'you say? ELMO: (A PAUSE, VERY TENTATIVELY) Well... could Maria come, too? BILL: Absolutely. ELMO: Well... Okay, Mr. Bill. BILL: That's great. ALAN: That is great. FIRE ON THE STREET - PART 5 (NEIGHBORHOOD) 33-0946-0:25 SCENIC: STREET IN FRONT OF FIREHOUSE, FIREHOUSE INT. (WATCH DESK) TALENT: MARIA, ELMO PROPS: FIRE ENGINE TECH: DISSOLVE UP ON A FIRE TRUCK EXITING THE GARAGE OF A FIREHOUSE. DISSOLVE TO: FIREHOUSE INT. MARIA AND ELMO ARE STANDING AT THE FRONT DESK OF THE FIREHOUSE. MARIA: Well, here we are, Elmo. At the firehouse. Are you ready for your special visit? A FIREFIGHTER ENTERS AND APPROACHES THEM. FIREFIGHTER: Hi, can I help you? MARIA: Yes, my name's Maria and this is Elmo. FIREFIGHTER: Oh, you're Bill's friends. MARIA: Uh-huh. FIREFIGHTER: He's expecting you-(CALLS) Hey, Bill! BILL ENTERS FROM THE GARAGE OF THE FIREHOUSE, CLOSING THE DOOR TO A FIRE TRUCK BEFORE HE DOES. BILL: (ENTERING, TO MARIA/ELMO) Hi, guys. (TO FIREFIGHTER) Thanks, Jeff. MARIA: Hi, Bill. BILL: Hi, Maria. Hi, Elmo. ELMO: Hey, Mr. Bill. BILL: I'm really glad you decided to come and visit. ELMO: (UNCERTAINLY) Oh, Elmo's glad too, he thinks. BILL: You ready to take a look around? MARIA: Sure. BILL: Okay, I'll show you the different parts of the firehouse.. CUT TO: A DINING ROOM. BILL: (INDICATING DINING TABLE) Look Elmo, in here we have a place where we eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. MARIA WAVES TO TWO FIREFIGHTERS SITTING AT THE TABLE. THEY WAVE BACK. ELMO: Oh, ooh and Elmo helps set the table sometimes at his house... BILL INDICATES THE KITCHEN. BILL: That's good. And in there we have a place where we cook. ELMO: Oh. MARIA: Something smells good. ELMO: (TO MARIA) Yeah. It looks a little bit like Elmo's kitchen, Maria. MARIA: Ohh. ELMO: (TO BILL) Gee, some of the places in Mr. Bill's firehouse are a lot like the places in Elmo's house. BILL: That's right. And then we have some places that are different, Elmo... ELMO: Ahh. CUT TO: FIRE ON THE STREET - PART 7 (TRANSITION) 33-0948-0:52 SCENIC: FIREHOUSE INT. (THE AREA AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FIRE POLE) TALENT: MARIA, ELMO, BILL SOUND EFFECTS: SLIGHT ECHO TECH: DISSOLVE BILL, ELMO AND MARIA ENTER AND CLUSTER AROUND THE BOTTOM OF THE FIRE POLE. ELMO: Oh, look, Maria. There's a pole in Mr. Bill's firehouse! MARIA: Yes, sort of like the pole you slide down at the playground, Elmo. ELMO: No! BILL: Yup. And when the bell rings and we have to go put out a fire, this is the fastest way to get downstairs. ELMO: Oh. BILL: You want to try it? ELMO: (A BEAT) Uh, uh, Maria has to come, too. MARIA: Sure! BILL: Let's go. ELMO: Oh, okay... THEY START OFF- DISSOLVE TO: THE SAME. THE AREA AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POLE IS NOW EMPTY. BILL: (OC, A SLIGHT ECHO, AS IF FROM THE AREA AT THE TOP OF THE POLE) Here goes- BILL COMES SLIDING DOWN THE POLE. HE LOOKS BACK UP. ELMO: That's cool, Mr. Bill! BILL: Okay, Elmo... ready when you are. WITH A SQUEAL OF GLEE, ELMO COMES SHOOTING DOWN THE POLE. HE LANDS LAUGHING, IN BILL'S ARMS. ELMO: Wheeeeeee! (LAUGHS) Ooh, now it's your turn, Maria! MARIA: (OC, FROM THE AREA AT THE TOP OF THE POLE) Uh, if you don't mind, I think I'll take the stairs. ELMO: (EXCITED, TO BILL) Okay! Um, what does Elmo get to do next, Mr. Bill? BILL: Come on, Elmo... I'll show you. ELMO: Oh, good. CUT TO: FIRE ON THE STREET - PART 8 (PEOPLE AND THEIR JOBS, SAFETY) 33-0950-1:37 SCENIC: FIREHOUSE INT. (GARAGE) TALENT: MARIA, ELMO, BILL, FIREFIGHTER (VOICE OVER) PROPS: FIRE ENGINE (DESCRIBED BELOW) TECH: DISSOLVE COSTUME: : FOR BILL: BOOTS, PANTS, AND SUSPENDERS, FOR ELMO: FIREFIGHTER'S HELMET TRACKING SHOT OF THE PUMPER TRUCK WHICH IS PARKED IN THE FIREHOUSE GARAGE. REVERSE ANGLE. BILL, MARIA, AND ELMO ARE STANDING TOGETHER, LOOKING AT THE TRUCK. ELMO IS STARING, WIDE-EYED. BILL: Look familiar, Elmo? ELMO: Oh, Elmo remembers that truck w-when Mr. Bill came to Sesame Street. BILL: It's called a Pumper, Elmo. ELMO: Mm. BILL: Would you like to sit in it? ELMO: Wha - sit in the fire truck like a firefighter...? BILL: (SMILING) Sure, come on... (HE REACHES DOWN AS IF TO PICK ELMO UP) ELMO: Yeah! (LAUGHS) MARIA: That's great, Elmo! CUT TO: THE SEATS IN THE BACK OF THE PUMPER'S CAB. BILL IS SETTLING ELMO INTO ONE OF THEM. BILL: (CONTINUE) We have lots of different kinds of trucks, Elmo. We use this Pumper to pump water at a fire. (HOLDING UP A HOSE) Then, we squirt the water at the fire with this hose. ELMO: Yeah. Oh, well, Elmo was playing with his friend Telly in a wading pool once and Telly squirted Elmo with a garden hose. BILL: Same idea... more water, bigger hoses. ELMO: Oh, well, Elmo squirted Telly back. (LAUGHS, THEN) Ooh, ooh, you know what, Mr. Bill? BILL: What? ELMO: Elmo thinks it would be great to be a firefighter! BILL: Well, then try this on. (PLACES A HELMET ON ELMO) ELMO: Oh! MARIA: Wow, Elmo! BILL: Pretty cool, huh? ELMO: Yeah! MARIA: Yeah. ELMO: Ooh, would Mr. Bill like to know a secret? BILL: What? ELMO: Well, Elmo was scared before, but Elmo isn't scared anymore. BILL: You were in a fire before, Elmo. That's a scary thing. ELMO: It is, Mr. Bill. BILL: But as long as you know what to do: To call a grown-up... ELMO: Mm. BILL: ...if you see smoke or fire, to get out of a building where there is a fire and stay out until a grown-up tells you to go back in... ELMO: Yeah. BILL: Do you need a little help with that helmet, Elmo? ELMO: Elmo thinks Mr. Bill's helmet might be a little heavy. BILL: (REACHING FOR IT) You want me to take it off? ELMO: No, no! No, it's okay. It's okay. (LAUGHS) BILL SMILES. TIGHTEN ON HIM AND MARIA. MARIA: It's really nice of you to do this. BILL: No, it's our pleasure. A FIREFIGHTER COMES OUT OF THE KITCHEN CARRYING A GLASS OF MILK, A GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH, AND A PICKLE. HE HANDS IT TO BILL, WHO PUTS IT DOWN IN FRONT OF ELMO. BILL: Thanks, Mookie. Here you go, Elmo... A grilled cheese sandwich, a pickle, and a glass of milk. ELMO: Oh, oh! (LAUGHS) Look, Maria! It's the super scrumptious lunch that Elmo didn't get to have at Hooper's Store!
